TULSA, Okla. — A $200 million project will change a large portion of public housing in Tulsa, including new parks, grocery stores and low income affordable homes thanks to grants given to the Tulsa Housing Authority.

“For the City of Tulsa, it puts a spot light on what we can do if we all come together and transform a neighborhood,” Becky Gligo said.

Gligo, who handles housing policies for the City of Tulsa, says these changes will impact the economy, education and transportation for the people.

“390 total apartments that will come down over the next three years and we will come back with 460 new apartments," Gligo said. "Of that 230 apartments will be subsidized.”

Tulsa Housing Authority's plan is to renovate the idea of public housing.

Jeff Hall has been leading this plan and he says Riverview Park Apartments and Brightwaters Apartments will be the first to be demolished.

"Introducing atlas six new streets, creating a more walkable neighborhood in addition to new $2 million public park, grocery store as well as ways to promote a more safe welcoming neighborhood for anybody, not just existing families,” Hall said.

The relocation coordinator Leslie Gross says they make sure all relocation fees and deposits are covered for residents who are displaced.

“We start paring them up with where they want to be and making sure that whole process of moving will fit them," Gross said. "Not putting them in a situation that’s going to cost them more than what they are used to paying.”

Gross says they ensure all residents who are moved during this process chose where they want to relocate to.

After choices are made, THA hires a moving company to give all families a smooth transition.

“This is going to have a great impact for all Tulsa’s, because we are going to have a really thriving neighborhood because of this and change can feel like a lot for people who might be living here but it’s a really good opportunity for them to see their neighborhood transform,” Gligo said.

THA hopes to begin demolition before the end of the year starting at Riverview Park Apartments.
