Muskogee unveils new urban green space project

Everyone in Tulsa knows how much a game changer the Guthrie Green has had on downtown revitalization.

Muskogee is about to get one of its own green spaces.

What used to be the home of Hunt’s department store is a reminder of so many downtowns across the region.

Muskogee doesn’t want another empty lot to be part of its story.

Main Street Muskogee just got approval to get a green space built on the vacant lot.

”I think there’s huge support from the Mayor, the City Council, from the community, from the [Muskogee] Foundation to clean up make downtown a vibrant happening place,” said John Newby of Main Street Muskogee.

Main Street Muskogee hopes to see everything from live music to special events in the space.

“The whole idea is if you have a concert, you can close the road, people can be on the streets with their lawn chairs and stuff and still see the concert even though they’re not inside the actual venue,” said Newby.

Down the street from the proposed green space is where Poppy’s Garden Owner Meagan Ferren is getting ready for Valentine’s Day.

“Investments being made in public spaces like that is only going to improve you know as a citizen of Muskogee it’s only going to improve our quality of life,” said Ferren.

She just opened her downtown store last July.

“You see all these events in Tulsa and I really feel like that can definitely happen here in Muskogee,” said Ferren.

The downtown movement is more than just new businesses popping up.

“It’s going to mean we can bring living down here, more restaurants down here, retail down here and so many more opportunities for growth,” said Ferren.

Main Street Muskogee said phase one of the green space project should cost roughly $200,000.

The project will be funded by the City of Muskogee Foundation and donors.

Main Street Muskogee told 2 Works For You it wants to get the construction project started as soon as possible and have it open by Labor Day weekend.
