MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame is working to place a monument in Muskogee honoring late country icon Merle Haggard.

The Muskogee Phoenix reports that the memorial at the Muskogee Civic Center would include a bronze sculpture of Haggard sitting on a bench with a guitar case and hat. Haggard recorded his album "Okie from Muskogee" at the Civic Center.

Hall of Fame Executive Director Jim Blair says the estimated cost of the statue is $150,000. He says the memorial could also expand to include a monument Haggard had designed for his California ranch.

The memorial will be paid for with private donations. The project has been about five years in the making.

Haggard died earlier this month at age 79.
