MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- The Muskogee Chief of Police is retiring after 49 years with the department.

Rex Eskridge's retirement will be effective July 13. He began his career with the Muskogee Police Department in 1969.

Eskridge has served as the Chief since 1992. Eskridge also served in the United States Marine Corps for five years before he was honorably discharged in 1970.

"Our officers today actively seek knowledge, training, better ways to make our community safe," Eskridge said. "I'm proud of how our current officers are progressive and active in our community. We've seen a drastic drop in violent crime and homicides compared to when I became Chief in the early 1990s."
