Beggs is moving toward allowing medical marijuana in its city limits.
The zoning and planning commission held a public hearing on Monday evening to get feedback about a dispensary on Broadway.
Some voiced support, saying medical marijuana has helped cut back on pain medication.
Others had concerns over a dispensary near places like a church.
"This was popular in the cities,” Beggs City Attorney Bill Gaddis said. “It was not popular in the smaller towns of rural Oklahoma. So there are a lot of people who don't understand it, and a lot of people who don't understand why they can't keep it out."
The city attorney says the only rule by the state is that it cannot be within 1,000 feet of a school.
He told 2 Works For You the town does not want a civil lawsuit, and the commission likely will recommend the dispensary move forward at its next meeting.
