Man to spend golden years at Holiday Inn rather than nursing home

A man in Texas says he's choosing to spend his golden years at a Holiday Inn - rather than a nursing home.

In a Facebook post, Terry Robison says the cost of a hotel stay per day at Holiday Inn will run about $60.

Robison claims he's getting breakfast, a spa, washer-dryer and cleaning for that cost - all while he says the average daily price of a nursing home stay totals up to about $188.

2 Works for You looked into it and while it would be a nice, comfy stay at the Holiday Inn, the price of a retirement home isn't all that different.

The reality is that a hotel stay will most likely cost you about $95 a night - even with a senior discount.

According to the Gen-worth Cost of Care survey, the average daily rate of an assisted living community is about $130.

With assisted living, seniors live in an apartment or condo, have three meals a day and have staff available to help them out with whatever they need, which is something a hotel doesn't necessarily provide.

Also, other options that are within the same price range include only paying for home-maker services or having a home health aide.

Seniors still have the independence they'd have at home, all while getting some extra help with health needs.

While these services do end up costing a little extra, remember that families can opt for long-term care insurance - meaning you can be reimbursed for care and bring down those costs.
