TULSA, Okla. — The Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals are drawing to a close this weekend with the final race tomorrow night.
Drivers and families have worked hard to get to this moment
But the races are more than just who wins, it’s also about the memories and the friendships built along the way.
The Walton family has been racing for more than two decades together at the Chili Bowl in recent years and at different tracks across the state.
Matt Walton started going to the races as a small child with his dad, Scott, and his grandfather.
They’re celebrating 25 years racing together as a family this year.
It’s a tradition and a bond that he sees in the racing community with other families.
“A lot of times the numbers on the car, you know, are the numbers his granddad started running or it’s a number that’s special to the family, a color scheme that’s special to a family, a name on the a car," said Matt Walton.
“It’s the greatest feeling ever to see a lifetime worth of friendships that we’ve made as we went down the road racing," said Scott Walton. "Good friends from all walks of life.”
Scott Walton said his hope is to continue racing with his son for as long as they’re able.
There's only a couple more chances to watch the hard work that drivers and families put into these races.
The last qualifying round is Friday at 5 p.m. then final race day on Saturday.
