OKMULGEE, Okla. -- Okmulgee Police said it started Wednesday afternoon.
They responded as people at the lake saw Cody Herndon struggle while swimming. Officers tell us other swimmers tried to save him, but the 19-year-old slipped under and wasn't seen again.
The police department used sonar equipment to find his body, and a diver made the recovery. Herndon's friends tell 2 Works for You Cody was a star athlete at Liberty-Mounds High School, who often trained other students.
"He was the best running back we had. We came from a little old school so we didn't have much. But we had heart, and he had a lot of heart," Evan Factor said.
Herndon graduated last year. He just bought his first car, and would have turned 20 next week. Factor said Cody would call every night just to check in, and he influenced everyone with his excitement for life.
Factor spent almost every day with Cody, and said they were best friends for four years. But he said Cody would not want the community to feel sorry. Instead, he believes his friend would rather be remembered for enthusiasm.
