TULSA -- The John 3:16 Mission handed out hundreds of Thanksgiving meals to people on Monday.
Less than a week before they were set up to pass out the baskets, John 3:16 said they only had 200 of the 4,000 turkeys they needed to fulfill people's needs.
After putting out a plea to the public for donations, Rev. Steve Whitaker said they were up to 3,800.
The Thanksgiving basket that includes a turkey and all the side dishes will provide a hot meal for people who would otherwise go without.
"We would go hungry," Luther Gower, who picked up a meal at John 3:16, said. "We sure would. We would go hungry."
Gower said he was ashamed to ask for help but he put his pride aside to make sure there was a hot meal on the table for their family.
Those on the receiving end are very grateful.
"It's a blessing to me to be able to receive it, because I didn't know which way to go to get me a turkey," Deborah Davis, who also got a meal from the mission, said.
They will continue passing out Thanksgiving meals through Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. People hoping to pick up a meal need to bring their ID and a piece of mail, preferably a bill, with their address on it. The meals are limited to one per household.
