TULSA, Okla. — Iron Gate is asking the public to skip the candy and bring canned goods this Halloween.
The soup kitchen and grocery pantry is hosting a drive-through Halloween food drive on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“Food insecurity is scary and unfortunately it’s very real right now for a lot of Tulsans,” said Carrie Vesely Henderson, Iron Gate’s executive director. “Iron Gate has seen demand for our grocery pantry balloon since the coronavirus pandemic began.”
The organization said it has given out more than 231,000 pounds of groceries since mid-March.
"We’re distributing so much food every week. So, we need the community’s help to continue to meet the need of our neighbors struggling to put food on the table,” Henderson said.
Here are the most needed items:
- canned tuna or chicken
- peanut butter and/or jelly (plastic jars)
- protein-rich soup
- canned pasta sauce
- pasta and/or rice
