TULSA, Okla. — It's National Reading Day and 2 Works For You's special event happening in just a few hours at one local school.

It's through our annual campaign called "If You Give A Child A Book" with the Scripps Howard Foundation.

And this year, 2 Works For You has chosen McAuliffe Elementary School in Tulsa to receive free books at a book fair.

More than 500 students will be receiving two free books to help encourage more reading.

This program called "If You Give A Child A Book" began back in 2017.

It's an important mission for 2 Works For You.

Research shows that a child who can't read at grade level by third grade, is four times less likely to graduate high school.

The principal at McAuliffe tells 2 Works For You that's why reading is such a big priority.

They even have a summer reading program, with a book van - it’s like a library on wheels - to encourage kids to keep reading outside school.

"What we want is for them to build comprehension and fluency by providing them books at home they get to practice, practice with their parents, practice with their siblings and that's our big goal," said Carly Carver with McAuliffe Elementary School.

More than 180,000 books have been given away through the program since 2017.

There are more surprises coming later today.

We'll have more details all day here on 2 Works For You.
