Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — This is day one of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week – they are two topics getting more attention in Tulsa.

The mayor’s office hired its first-ever housing policy director, Becky Gligo.

She says getting a better grip on panhandling means facing what is being called “the eviction crisis”.

"The lack of affordable housing is being exacerbated by our current eviction crisis," Gligo said. "Both of those things feed growing numbers of homeless Tulsans. Our wages in Tulsa haven't been, necessarily, keeping up with the cost of housing. We also have a lot of housing in disrepair."

Gligo’s new job is making sure everyone has a decent and safe place to live.

She partners with local organizations as part of her plan to disrupt the eviction crisis. Another part of the work includes educating tenants and landlords.
