SAND SPRINGS, Okla. — A historic power plant which has sat empty for years near the growing downtown of Sand Springs is now up for sale.

The plant is about 32,000-square feet and sits on almost 2 acres of land.

Many people in the community don’t want to see the historic building torn down, but they want for it to be part of the town’s growing revitalization.

On the corner of South Main and Morrow Road sits the piece of history dating back to 1911.

“This originally was the power plant for Sand Springs,” Sand Springs Chamber of Commerce president Kristen Cepak said.

At one point there was a plan to turn it into a brewery, but those plans fell through. Now vacant for years, the Sand Springs Powerhouse is for sale again.

“It’s such a majestic building. It just needs some TLC," Cepak said. "It needs someone with deep pockets to come in and to make it what it’s going to be.”

Cepak said within the past five years, dozens of commercial and locally owned businesses have opened, giving the town a 7 percent bump in sales tax revenue. She said if the building were to be redone, it would add to the historic character of the town.

"The community doesn’t want to lose it," Cepak said. "They don’t want to see it torn down. They don’t want it to be a pile of rubble. They want something done with it."

The town’s business owners have a few ideas.

“I’ve heard wedding venue. I’ve heard event venue. I’ve heard people talk about restaurants where they have the games outside," Yellow House Market and Boutique owner Lisa Miller said.

“It’s definitely a little bit of an eyesore right now," said Allison Wells, the lead designer and manager at Coble's Flowers. "I think other businesses, if that looked nicer and also had some things going there, would probably help promote other businesses to come in to Sand Springs.”

Renderings have been drawn to show what the space could look like, giving endless options for the once booming building.
