HENRYETTA -- History was made in Henryetta on Saturday night as the first legal dance was held since the city abolished a no-dancing ordinance earlier this week.

Just last week, a 40 year-old ordinance disallowing residents from dancing within 500 feet of a church forced an event center to cancel it’s Valentine’s Day dance. On Saturday night, many people who planned on going to that dance are celebrating the victory of the city abolishing the old law and partying with “Elvis”.

“It’s always exciting to see Elvis,” said Casey Bacon.

Casey Bacon said she came to Henryetta not just to see the Elvis impersonator, but to dance.

“When there’s music, we will dance,” said Bacon.

Bacon was one of 100 people who attended the first legal dance within 500 feet of a church in Henryetta.

“It’s great for Henryetta. We don’t have a theater. We don’t have much of really anything in this area, so, it’s a great place to have dinner and get together and watch a little show,” said event organizer Shelly Emerson.

Event organizers said now that dancing in town is legal, they’re hoping the event center will become a popular place for various occasions.

“This facility can be used for weddings, showers, graduations parties, anniversaries, weddings. Not just entertainment, but we want that too,” said Emerson.

Bacon said the Elvis Dance is a an event she will never forget.

“People will be talking about it for a long time,” said Bacon.

Organizers said the dance was a sold-out event.
