Heath alert: what you need to ask your tattoo artist before you get new ink

Getting inked up? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants you to ask your tattoo artist or studio about what inks they'll be using.

The FDA has recalled six inks because they're contaminated with bacteria. That means you could get infected or injured if they're used on you.

The recalled inks include:

  • Scalpaink SC , Scalpaink PA , and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics (all lots)
  • Dynamic Color - Black tattoo ink manufactured by Dynamic Color Inc (lots 12024090 and 12026090 )
  • Solid Ink- Diablo (red) tattoo ink manufactured by Color Art Inc. (dba Solid Ink) (dba Antone's Ink) (lot 10.19.18)

Commonly reported symptoms of tattoo-ink-associated infections include the appearance of rashes or lesions in areas where the contaminated ink has been applied. Some tattoo infections can also result in permanent scarring.

If you experience symptoms of infection or an injury after getting a tattoo, you should should consult a healthcare professional and inform your tattoo artist, the FDA said. You can also inform the FDA here .
