TULSA -- Hundreds of thousands of visitors have flocked to the Gathering Place since it's opening in the fall, but some question when the Children's Museum Discovery Lab will be built next to the award-winning park.
"There’s something different, there’s no way you can cover the whole park and enjoy everything in one sitting," said Nora Billie, who was visiting the Gathering Place.
The 2018 winner of USA Today's Best New Attraction in the Country, parents tells us there's something for everyone to enjoy at the Gathering Place.
"We actually love the seats on, I think it’s called Peggy’s Pond, because my son likes to take rocks and throw them in and I can sit and relax and it’s really nice," said Danielle Mendelsberg, who visits the Gathering Place.
The Gathering Place opened back in September, which was just the beginning. The designs from KKT Architects show what phase two of the park looks like, which is described as a hands-on learning facility designed to ignite the curiosity of children.
"We’re so excited I’m all about him exploring and learning through building and touching like the sensory garden there so if it’s an extension of that I think it’s going to be amazing," said Mendelsberg.
Officials were anticipating to break ground in March or April of 2019, but has been pushed back. While there's no concrete date, in a statement from Discovery Lab, the Director of Organizational Development says, "We look forward to breaking ground on our new home in 2019,".
"It’s in an area where it welcomes all people, all sides of town to come, it’s awesome," said Billie.
The 50,000 square-foot facility will have an outdoor amphitheater, green rooftop terrace, and a second floor filled with classrooms that will house the Tulsa Public Schools' STEM center.
Full statement from Discovery Lab on the progress of construction: "Discovery Lab hopes to be a symbol of meaningful play in Tulsa for many years to come. In our new 50,000 square-foot facility we will be able to deliver even more STEAM education to Tulsa area families. We look forward to breaking ground on our new home in 2019 and are thankful to be part of such a philanthropic community."
