TULSA -- Hundreds of animals found refuge in Green Country after flooding from Hurricane Harvey forced them to flee from Texas, and now some of those pets are bound for other places.
The Humane Society of Tulsa and Miranda Lambert's MuttNation Foundation rescued nearly 120 dogs from shelters threatened by floodwaters in the Houston area. The groups worked Monday morning to send these pets to their final destinations.
Two airplanes from the group Wings of Rescue flew into a Tulsa hangar to ferry the dogs to shelters in Illinois and Wisconsin, places where the shelters are far less crowded.
"As hard as our team has worked this week, as much as the community has stepped up," Evan Fadem, executive director of the Humane Society of Tulsa, said, "to know that these animals are going to go on and find wonderful homes with great people is incredible."
Other local pet rescues plan to take displaced animals to different parts of the country. In about a week, the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals will send nearly 200 animals taken in after Harvey to the East coast.
"Since we have the pet overpopulation issue in Tulsa, we don't want to bring pets to stay here," Jamee Suarez with OAA said. "We want them to move onto other destinations that really do want pets and need them."
A van left Monday morning from the Checotah Animal Shelter carrying 13 dogs and 10 cats rescued in Texas to a shelter in Illinois.
