TULSA -- Former Tulsa County Chief Public Defender, Rob Nigh, died Sunday morning.

Nigh stepped down from his position during the summer of 2017 for health reasons but said he planned to keep working while he underwent treatment.

He was named the full-time chief defender in Tulsa County in 2015.

Nigh served as one of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh's trial attorneys in 1995. More recently, he represented Michael Bever, who is accused of killing five of his family members alongside his brother in Broken Arrow.

District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler issued the following statement:

"Rob Nigh stood for something beyond himself.  He was a fierce advocate of the rule of law on both sides of the courtroom.  He led by example in everything he did, and he did it with a sincerity that you could not help but admire.  He will be greatly missed by myself and the rest of the legal profession."

Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado issued the following statement:

"Our prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends of Former Chief Public Defender Rob nigh, as we all mourn his passing. He was a gentleman and true professional. He will be missed."
