TULSA, Okla. -- Flags can be spotted across Maple Ridge, as well as the Forest Ridge and Forest Creek communities.
If you buy a subscription through Boy Scout Troop 26 they'll plant them for any flag related holiday. More than 300 people invite the troop to put up flags five times a year to honor their country.
Scoutmasters said as they watch this program grow, they hope to get sponsors for the $50 subscription, allowing veterans to use this service for free.
"It's time together. It's talking about why we put the flags up, it's talking about the care of the flags, the troop also has a flag retirement ceremony that really makes them respect the flag and learn more of what it really means," assistant troop master Grant Cox said.
For Cox's son, the meaning is two-fold.
"It just stands for our freedom and liberty and all the people that died and fought to keep this flag and our freedom," Joshua Cox said.
Cox also recognizes his own freedom.
"I can stay in my room, and just play video games or read," he said.
One veteran already subscribes to the Fly the Flag program. Alan Beckert said being honored by the troops would just be an added perk to boy scouts recognizing his service.
"Just the history of the country and what this country has done for us as individuals have been a big part of my life and I hope everyone else's," Beckert said.
A former boy scout himself, Beckert enjoys watching the troop create community.
"That's what the military did for me I was kind of a wayward youth when I went into the military and I ended up with a career where I spent 40 years working with a major airline," he said.
If you'd like to sponsor a veteran you can reach out to the troop by emailing Christopher Smith at christopher@sixbyte.com.
