TULSA -- The first flu-related death of the season has been reported in Tulsa County, according to the Tulsa Health Department.

Flu has now claimed the lives of six people throughout the state during the 2018-19 flu season. About 134 people have been hospitalized for flu since Sept. 1.

Health officials say the best protection against the flu is to receive the vaccine.

“Individuals who receive the flu vaccine are not only protecting themselves but also those around them, including babies too young to receive a vaccination,” said Tulsa Health Department Executive Director Dr. Bruce Dart. “We still have flu vaccine available, so if you haven’t already, now is the time to get your flu vaccination.”

Those at greatest risk for serious complications related to the flu are children younger than five years old, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with other serious health conditions.
