TULSA — A teacher for 3 years at Hamilton Elementary, Joy Brown works with Pre-k students teaching them the alphabet and using her experience as a social worker.

"Social work and teaching, it kind of combines together," Joy says.

She was nominated because she teaches her students to be life-long learners, and uses poetry, music, and hands-on learning techniques.

And she's known to help single moms however she can.

Joy says she has to live by her name, so that's a focus every time she's with her students.

"I bring joy into the classroom by laughing, having fun, 47 kids love to sing, they love to dance, they love to learn," Joy says.

A quick look into her classroom and you can hear the joy in these young voices.

Joy says she was drawn to teaching because of her time working at a homeless shelter.

"Children there were just, it was like I was a magnet and I said the next position that I have, I want to work with children full-time."

So Joy, for all the joy you bring to the children in your classroom, congratulations for being named an excellent educator!

"Thank you so much. This means so much to me. I love what I do, you have to have a passion for it."
