Energy Star's recommended summer thermostat settings

According to Consumer Reports, Energy Star, a federal program run by the DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency, recommends the coolest you should keep your house is 78 degrees.

Energy Star says to try the following settings for maximum efficiency:

  • 78 degrees when you are home
  • 85 degrees when you are at work or away
  • 82 degrees when you are sleeping.

Energy Star also recommends turning a fan on to cause a wind chill effect.
