COWETA, Okla. -- Fire officials say evacuations have been lifted after a large grass fire broke out Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the fire on 141st Street South and 229th East Avenue late Thursday afternoon.

Helicopters could be seen carrying water to fight the fire. Watch a Facebook live from the scene of the grass fire below:

One area resident, Annette Capps says her 83-year-old mother was inside their home when the fire started. "I could see they were probably about 40 or 50 foot flames coming into the south part of our property and it was spreading very rapidly,” said Capps.

Capps says after seeing the flames, she immediately mover her animals. "Our cows were very frightened because the flames were getting very close to where they were so they kind of ran up against the fence and so we had to open the gate and just let them into the yard so they could get away from the fire."

This isn’t the first time a fire has burned her property. "2007. Our 120 acres here burned everything. Every square inch of our land except the five acres where our house and barn was."

Fire officials say a cigarette may have started the fire. They say more than 400 acres were burned.

As Capps surveys her land and checks for hotspots throughout the night, she says she’s just glad grass was the only thing charred in the flames.

"It really makes you reevaluate again what is really important in your life. And obviously the first thing I grabbed was my mother!"

Fire crews are say they’ll stay out until midnight checking for hot spots they say are likely to pop up.
