Construction on I-44 a precursor to larger widening project

TULSA — Construction has already started on the I-44 bridge improvement project.

This is the first project in a list expected for this stretch of road.

ODOT says they expect to begin a resurfacing project from the Arkansas River bridge to the I-244 split that could potentially begin as early as next weekend.

Kenna Mitchell with ODOT says the current work and resurfacing project are both preventative maintenance work to try and make the area easier to drive.

Mitchell says that the corridor has had a lot of drivers complaining about the rough conditions.

She says all of the maintenance is happening before they begin a much larger project.

"It is a little bit of a precursor to some upcoming work that we have in the corridor which will be where we are looking at widening sections of I-44," said Kenna Mitchell, ODOT spokesperson. "This is a large area it's the oldest remaining interstate on our system so it needs a lot of work to bring it up to really, today's standards and to handle future traffic as well."

Right now, if you use this stretch of road you'll find it narrowed through Wednesday each week.

On top of that, the Elwood ramp is closed until further notice.

The construction to widen the road between Riverside Drive and Union is expected to start sometime in 2020.

The additional phases of that plan have not been determined.

Mitchell says ODOT still has to nail down the funding for the widening project.
