MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- As the nation remembers those who lost their lives during the attacks on 9/11, Muskogee honors a person close them who was at the Pentagon that day 17 years ago.

Army Major Ron Milam graduated from Muskogee high school in 1986. He played on the basketball team, ran track and cross country, and was in thr JROTC program.

On September 11, 2001 Major Milam was at a meeting at the Pentagon when a plane hijacked by terrorists hit into the building.

Family and friends found out days later that Major Milam died during those attacks.

The school honored him by renaming the gym in his name, and retiring his basketball jersey from high school and college.

"He did something for his country and he was a country man, everything was about his country, so that eased us knowing that he went away protecting something that she really believed in and something that he loved," said Angelique Hillmon, a family friend of Major Milam, and Health and Physical Education teacher at Muskogee high school.

Major Milam served his country for ten years. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
