CLAREMORE, Okla. - A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of a hospital.

It happened at Hillcrest Hospital on Blue Starr Drive Thursday afternoon.

Claremore Police and an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper responded to a suicidal subject call around 3:30 p.m. When they arrived at the hospital they identified the man and the vehicle from the call.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesperson Dwight Durant said the man got out of his vehicle and fired a shot from his "long weapon." He then got back into his car.

Officers approached the man, who then got out of his car again. Durant said the man pointed his weapon at the officers and that shots were fired back at the man, but it's unknown if officers hit the man. He retreated to his car where Durant said the officers heard another gun shot.

Durant said they believe the man died as a result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

"We don't know if the law enforcement officer, when he fired a shot, hit him or not. It's under investigation," Durant said.

The type of weapon and how many shots were fired are also under investigation. The man's identity has not been released.

The emergency room is accepting patients.
