CATOOSA, Okla. — How close should medical marijuana businesses be to a school? One Catoosa woman thinks a new one is too close.
Ladora Todhunter has lived in her house for more than 30 years. Now, for the first time, a medical marijuana business is going in just two houses away. But her biggest concern is the proximity to Cherokee Elementary School. The school is across the street and down a ways from the new medical marijuana business. Todhunter said she thinks this is too close for students. There is a liquor store next door to the medical marijuana business. But Todhunter said, that has been there for years and, to her at least, is different. She thinks the medical marijuana business could be dangerous.
"Definitely not far enough," she said. "Would you want your elementary or middle school, or even high school for that matter, being around pot and stuff? It's just opening the gateway."
The city of Catoosa said they follow state law. The state law said neither medical marijuana nor liquor stores can be within 1,000 ft. of a school. The city said the new medical marijuana business and the existing liquor store. Both are in compliance with that law.
We reached out to the owner of the medical marijuana business owner and the school district, but have not heard back from either.
