OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Education is honoring five Oklahoma schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for their overall academic excellence.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the honorees Tuesday. The schools are among 285 public and 50 private schools nationwide that will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington in November.

The Oklahoma honorees are considered exemplary high performing schools, meaning they are among the state's highest achievers in student test scores and high school graduation rates. State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister praised the schools for their hard work.

The schools are: Carnegie Elementary School, Flower Mound Elementary School in Lawton, Harding Fine Arts Academy in Oklahoma City, Schwartz Elementary School in Oklahoma City and the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences.
