At 8 a.m., the first Trader Joe's in Oklahoma opened its doors; making it the fourth grocery store in less than a mile for the Brookside area.
For North Tulsans, this is a stark contrast to their neighborhoods, where not a single grocery store can be found. The closest is a Walmart Supercenter that sits in East Tulsa on the other side of Admiral Place, the dividing line for North Tulsa.
Historically, North Tulsa is one of the poorest parts of Tulsa, with many of the residents being lower income.
The community has attempted to put in a grocery store. The first was an Albertsons that closed in 2007, and the other was a Gateway Market that closed in 2014. The only option for North Tulsans are smaller markets, QuikTrip and Braum's shopping sections.
