TULSA, OK (KJRH) — October 1, 2019 will mark an important turning point for IDs in Oklahoma. That's when we'll learn all the details of Real ID, and be able to put our physical identification onto our phones.
The new technology is a free optional mobile service called Mobile ID. Secretary of Digital Transformation David Ostrowe says it will use biometric screening to log you in.
"If we have a way to prove who you are through facial recognition, there are a lot of things we could eliminate and be first and pioneers in the security field in the United States," Ostrowe said.
The developers are working to pair it with law enforcement to alert you if you're being pulled over, and they could also partner with stores and banks to use for quick identification.
"One of the things we're working on is once you identify yourself through facial recognition, you'll be able to go ahead and enter it in websites to prove your ID, very similar to what you see with Amazon Prime," Ostrowe said.
When the app rolls out in October, we'll also start finding out just what information we need to apply for Real ID. Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety tell 2 Works for You Real ID will go live on April 30, 2020.
