Battling type 2 diabetes through plant-based diets

TULSA - On this World Diabetes Day, an Oklahoma doctor is offering tips on ways to improve your health and possibly prevent chronic illnesses, through a plant based diet Thursday evening at Mother Road Market.

Robert Reed was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and after being put on this diet plan, he said it’s now become a lifestyle.

Reed was spending hundreds of dollars each month on medication, high blood pressure and was overweight.

In September, his physician, Dr. Brent Beasley, put him on a plant based diet.

As of this week, he’s now lost 40 pounds and his medications have been cut in half.

"If you really want to make a difference in type 2 diabetes, if you really want to see change, the number one thing you can do is change your diet," said Dr. Beasley.

"I never looked at it as a lifestyle change," Reed said. "I looked at it as being on a diet and that was not very appealing to me."

Reed said it’s now completely changed his outlook on what he eats and now considers himself a vegan.
