TULSA, Okla. — Staff with the American Red Cross of Tulsa say this time of year all the way through January is one of the hardest times to get blood donations, but the need for blood never changes year-round.
"Every two seconds some one in our country needs blood and that's regardless of the date on the calendar," said Jan Hale, the Communications Manager for the American Red Cross in Tulsa.
Hale says its the busy holiday season that leaves their supplies low.
“Blood donations get further and further down on the to-do list," Hale said.
Only three out of ever 100 people donate blood, but during the holidays that number slips even lower.
“Patients are waiting for that gift of blood regardless of what the calendar says," Hale said.
However, consistent donors say, if you are able, giving blood should stay at the top of your list all year long.
"You never know it might be your turn next week when you need some one when you need something someone else can give," Steve Sumrall said. He has been giving blood for years. "It doesn't cost anything and it's amazing to know you are helping some one."
