TULSA, Okla. — The local 514 chapter of the Transport Workers Union (TWU) that represents maintenance workers from American Airlines are holding rallies on Wednesday at the Tulsa International Airport.
They're protesting against the outsourcing of maintenance aircraft jobs overseas. The chapter's president, Dale Danker, says the number one priority should be safety. He says there is less Federal Aviation Administration oversight in foreign countries.
The other issue that goes hand in hand with job outsourcing is workers' jobs in Tulsa. Danker says if AA continues to send maintenance jobs abroad, future layoffs would be inevitable.
The airline's maintenance base has been one of Oklahoma's largest employers since the 1940s. Danker says there are currently about 4,200 workers.
He adds the TWU has been in contract negotiations with AA since 2015.
The group of union members plan to protest until 5 p.m.
