SAND SPRINGS, Okla. -- Sand Springs Police said a homeowner was holding a suspect at gunpoint in his house Thursday when he called 911 to report a burglary.

When police got there, they found another suspect shot dead outside the back door.

Jessica Dover said she knew the men, and this does not come as a surprise.

"He had robbed my grandmother's neighbor. Left him for dead, beat him up. So I kind of knew who he was. Well the other guy, Brandon, I've known him for eight years. And he's no good at all," Dover said.

Neighbors said crime is common in their neighborhood.

"There's just a lot of vacant homes over there and it just seems like there's a lot of drug activity and a lot of homeless people that find themselves in these homes," Casey Simmons said.

Police had responded to the same home for a burglary earlier in the day. Neighbors say there is little police can do.

"The cops just kind of shoo them out and they try to board them up," Simmons said.

37-year-old James Patterson was found dead on scene. After police arrived, they arrested 18-year-old Brandon Gray.
