Local schools close in on full week of snow days

TULSA, Okla. — A winter weather system moved in late Sunday night, bringing frigid temperatures and sleet to the Tulsa area throughout the workweek.

The 2 News Oklahoma Severe Weather Team is tracking changing conditions around northeast Oklahoma and will update this blog as the system moves through and out of the area.

Jenks Public Schools will be closed Thursday.

Cities south of the Tulsa metro area are preparing for the possibility of freezing overnight. We have a crew in McAlester tracking the changing conditions.

Tulsa Public Schools will be closed Thursday due to winter weather conditions.

Union Public Schools announced the district is closing Thursday due to weather and road conditions.

Streets begin clearing as temperatures climbed above freezing Wednesday. More freezing rain is expected in the southern part of Green Country.

Brine crews will address any winter precipitation that moves through tonight. Since Monday, crews have applied 1,600 tons of salt, 33,000 gallons of brine, and have plowed 9,700 lane miles.

EMSA responded to two cold exposure calls on Tuesday, taking two people to the hospital. All of their other call types are considered within their usual expected ranges.

Tulsa Public Schools and Union Public Schools announced they'll be closed Wednesday due to winter weather. Broken Arrow and Owasso will move to distance learning.

EMSA reported as of 4 p.m. they'd responded to 26 car crashes and taken seven people to the hospital due to injuries from those crashes.

Update on slick road conditions in Tulsa Monday afternoon

10 a.m.

EMSA reported their crews responded to 21 car crashes, and took five people to the hospital in their Tulsa service area as of 10 a.m. EMSA says that is five times the number of crashes they've usually responded to by this time Monday morning.

9:22 a.m.

City of Tulsa crews came into work at midnight to apply brine on roads, particularly hills and overpasses. The city says they'll spent Monday's daytime focusing on intersections.

5 a.m.

Tulsa and Jenks are among the school districts to cancel classes Monday morning due to winter weather conditions.
