An inspiring act of heroism in Pawnee County.
A 9-year-old boy saves his grandmother from a burning house.
“If I didn’t have her, I don’t know what I would do,” Zach Dunnam said.
Zach and his Grandma Nancy King are inseparable. This morning around 2:30 am their bond was tested.
“I saw smoke every where, I’m like they can’t be cooking that’s too much smoke for cooking, it has to be a fire,” Zach said.
Quickly burning up, Zach realized he had to get out. But first, he had to grab his grandmother.
“I told Zachary to hold on to me,” King said.
Navigating the smoky home, Grandma tripped over a plant as Zach tried to find a way out.
“I thought I was on my last breath,” King said.
She told him to leave her behind, but he refused.
“I knew where she was, I ran back and grabbed her arm and I pulled her towards the door,” Zach said.
Fortunately everyone inside got out. Zach never forgetting his best friend.
“She’s everything to me.”
And Grandma is forever grateful for this brave little boy.
“Every grandmother or grandfather that has grandkids coming up, hold onto them and hold them dear because they will surprise you.”
