50 years of trash resurfaces after flooding at Oxley Nature Center in Tulsa

TULSA — Tulsa's Oxley Nature Center was underwater a few weeks ago due to flooding, but now, those waters have unearthed 50 years of trash.

Officials say the nature center built on top of an old landfill. The recent flooding has caused banks around it to erode, exposing buried trash from the landfill.

Park officials tell us in comparison to the size of the center, only a small area is covered in trash.

Officials say much of the garbage comes from things that don't break down, like plastic bottles and shopping bags.

The park is waiting for the Department of Environmental Quality to come in and assess how to begin the cleanup.
