OKLAHOMA CITY — Tulsa's 2020 Williams Route 66 Marathon and the 20th Anniversary OKC Memorial Marathon are going virtual.

Officials said although it won't be the same as an in-person race, they feel it is the safest in regards to the continued rise of coronavirus cases in the state.

Tulsa's 2020 Williams Route 66 Marathon won't be like other virtual races. Officials said race packets will includes a lot of goodies as well as a medal and specially designed hoodie.

Participants will have three options for the Tulsa marathon:

  • Participate in the virtual event, to be held the weekend of November 21-22, 2020.
  • Donate the value of your registration to Kicks for Kids, the official charity of the Williams Route 66 Marathon.
  • Defer your registration to 2021 or 2022.

Officials with the Route 66 Marathon said participants have one week to pick their option. If they do not pick an option, the entry will automatically be donated to Kicks for Kids.

Officials with the OKC Memorial Marathon said they felt going virtual is the best option.

“While we would all prefer to have 25,000 people at the start line in front of the Memorial Museum on October 4th, it just isn’t possible at this time in Oklahoma City. After considering feedback from runners, the health of Oklahoma communities and advice from medical professionals, a virtual race is the best solution for the 2020 Run to Remember. The disappointment of not running the Memorial Marathon together is being felt by all of us. But the health and safety of everyone participating – runners, volunteers, and the community support – must be our highest priority.”
Kari Watkins | Race Director, Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.

The virtual race is now scheduled from Oct. 4 through Oct. 18.

Officials with the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon said all participants registered for the marathon will be automatically transferred to the virtual race. Should participants not want to run virtually, they can donate their entry to the Oklahoma city National Memorial & Museum or move their entry to the 2021 or 2022 Memorial Marathon.

Changes must be made online by Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The OKC Memorial Marathon and Tulsa's Williams Route 66 teamed up this year. Officials said any participant in the virtual OKC Memorial Marathon or Half Marathon and the virtual Williams Route 66 Marathon or Half Marathon in Nov. 2020 will be given a special commemorative Oklahoma Standard medal.
