TULSA, Okla. — A total of 15 recent graduates from Tulsa Public Schools were recognized for the 2020 Tomas Rivera Award "Heroes in Education" for their positive impact in Tulsa's Latinx community.
They were chosen based on their leadership in after-school activities, grade point average and attendance.
This year's winners included, Jose Saldivar, from Booker T. Washington.
"I've always tried really hard in school because it's been super important to me mainly due to my parents," explains Saldivar, "They put quite an emphasis on it."
He says his parents didn't attend high school; his mother's education didn't go past the fifth grade.
Saldivar hopes to continue setting an example for his younger siblings and making a difference.
He is enrolled at the University of Oklahoma this fall and plans to study computer science.
