After more than 16 years in business near the eastern front of the Utica Square shopping center, John Daniel Footwear has closed it's doors for good.
Store owner, Dan Parker, made the decision to retire and instead of co-owner Kevin Parker taking over the shop, all parties will go in different directions.
Although no announcements were formally made, owners did make an official statement regarding on the store's closing.
“We did close this weekend. The owner is retiring and decided to close,” John Daniel Footwear said.
With the closing of the shoe store, three long standing Utica Sqaure stores, including Petty's Fine Foods and Miss Jackson's, have closed within the past five months making the number of privately owned stores smaller within the historical shopping center.
Marilyn Mabrey Sullivant has visited Utica Square for more than 50 years and says small owned businesses added value to the overall shopping experience.
“Over the last 10 or 15 years most of the smaller family owned stores are no longer here. Not to say anything about the other stores, but you kind of miss that family, that private service, the local service that you get,” Sullivant said.
Owners of the Utica Sqaure center, Helmerich & Payne, have not yet confirmed what businesses may replace the vacant stores.
