TULSA - Hundreds of people attended a memorial service for former New York Jets Defensive Lineman, Dennis Byrd this week.
Dave Owens said he'll never forget sharing the field with former fellow University of Tulsa football player, Dennis Byrd.
"It's just kind of surreal to think that while you hadn't seen him in a while, to think that you're not going to have that opportunity again, that's why I'm here," said Owens.
At Tuesday's memorial service for Byrd, family, church members and former teammates spoke about the good times they had with the former NFL player.
"Everybody talked about his compassion for people, his love for God, and just the way he went about things. It was a very fitting service," said Former TU Football Coach Dave Rader.
From Byrd's days at TU, playing with the New York Jets and overcoming a serious injury, Rader said Byrd's loved ones want everyone to remember his message he leaves behind.
"These things that he showed now. Now don't forget them. Don't forget to be tough, but be compassionate, don't forget to go at things with all that you have. Don't forget to look at people and see them for who they are," said Rader.
Owens said he'll never forget how tough, and humble Byrd was, despite his success.
"So he never let it get to his head, he was still that fun loving guy and positive influence. Never, never a negative word out of his mouth," said Owens.
50 year-old Byrd died in a car crash in Rogers County on October 16, 2016. Byrd leaves behind a wife and four children.
