Group of cemetery plot owners upset over conditions, honor of verbal contracts for plots

Mannford, Okla.-- A group of cemetery plot owners say they feel cheated after the Oak Hill Cemetery board hiked up prices for plots they were making payments on. Many of them say they had a verbal agreement with the previous owners that's not being honored.

I had to sign a whole new contract but the rates are going to increase from $275 to $850,” said Rhonda Smith.

They say plot prices recently tripled. The cemetery's board members say previous verbal agreements with a board president who's now gone won't be honored.

"He let everybody do it that way that's just how he operated he was a man of his word and everybody trusted him, "Smith said.

2 Works For You reached out to the Better Business Bureau in Tulsa for advice on verbal contracts.

"Let's say you've made a handshake deal with someone and a new owner comes in... by law they don't have to agree to your handshake deal so to have that in writing is very important,” said Tulsa BBB President Amie Mitchell,

Meanwhile, a few dozen people packed the chapel for the board's regular meeting, looking for answers.

But without a written contract, many of the plot owners could be out of luck.
