Gold 4 Kids of Tulsa raises $70,000 for patients at the Children's Hospital at St. Francis

Dozens stood outside on the Children's playground at St. Francis Hospital as Gold 4 Kids of Tulsa presented a check of $70,00 to the hospital's staff.

Gold 4 Kids, a cancer fundraising organization, focuses on raising money for research, clinical trails, and special projects in order to support the clinical pediatric oncology department at St. Francis hospital.

Gold 4 Kids executive director, Candine Hobbs, visited St. Francis after her son was diagnosed with leukemia and says she decided to be proactive soon after being exposed to the realities of childhood cancer.

"We thought we need to do something about childhood cancer, to help some day when he's done with treatment. Well that someday turned into  couple of weeks when we realized that we wanted to help in anyway we could," Hobbs said.

The majority of the funds from the donation will aid ongoing psychology education and symptom management projects the hospital is continuing to implement for children undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

St. Francis pediatric oncologist, Dr. Ashraf Mohamed, says although large amounts of money is always needed in pediatric cancer research a great deal can be accomplished through support from parents and community members.

"Believe it or not you can make major differences with still small amounts of money if you have people behind you. Especially with the parents and their dedication and the staff willing to improve things," Dr. Mohamed said.
