TULSA - A man is saying is tenth grade daughter was in gym class when another student pushed her, breaking her femur.

James Baughman says the Union High School nurse called him Tuesday saying his daughter Rebekah had been hurt, and she was worried she'd sprained something.

Two doctors visits later they found she'd broken her femur.

“It’s just very peculiar that a child would push them hard enough to where she hit the floor just right to break her femur, and it not be intentional," he said.

He called the principal but said information was limited. However, he believes the other student also has special needs, so he doesn't blame them.

Baughman said it's already difficult caring for his daughter who has autism and cerebral palsy. He said she doesn't talk and is prone to falling.

Now, he's worried about her future and if that future includes Union.

“I think the school should’ve taken extra safeguards working with people like Rebekah," he said.

He says an adult should've been with her, and she needed padding around her if she was going to be on a hard surface.

But he says before this he hasn't had any problems with Union or its IEP program. Some of her teachers even sent cards to her hospital room.

She had surgery and has been laying in a bed at St. Francis Children's Hospital since it happened.

Union Public Schools sent 2 Works for You the following statement:

“An incident took place with a Union High School student on March 7 when she was in her Physical Education class.  The adults and teachers on site responded promptly.  Because the incident involved another student, and due to privacy laws, we can’t get into specific details about what occurred.

We contacted the girl’s parent immediately and she was picked up by her father. We were later informed by her father that she would be absent from school and would require further medical attention.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her as she recovers, and we look forward to seeing her back at school just as soon as she is able.”
