TULSA - Enrollment at Tulsa Public Schools fell to its lowest level in at least 10 years, while some suburban school districts in the area continued to increase.

School districts are required to certify their enrollment with the state board of education by October 1 of each school year.

A 2 Works for You analysis of enrollment in the largest school districts in the Tulsa area showed increases in Broken Arrow, Jenks and Owasso Public Schools, while Tulsa and Union Public Schools' enrollment numbers were down from previous year.

TPS' initial figures show a decrease of about five percent. The area's largest school district went from more than 41,000 students in 2012 to 40,867 last school year to an estimated 38,700 this school year.

Union Public Schools also saw a decline in enrollment. The district grew from 2012 through 2016, from 15,298 to 16,006 students, respectively, according to the Oklahoma Department of Education. The 2016-2017 school year saw a 49-student drop to 15,957.

Muskogee Public Schools also showed a decline of about two percent, from 6,098 students in the 2015-2016 school year to 5,979 students this school year.

Some education funding is based upon enrollment numbers reported to the state on October 1 each year.
