COWETA, Okla. - A local store that's been in business over one hundred years is welcoming a new and unusual customer that's catching a lot of attention.

As the sounds of Fall Festival fill the streets of downtown Coweta, Coweta Hardware and Lumber is filled with the sounds of its new guest, Henryetta the Rhode Island Red Chicken.

“She had crossed the road a couple times and then she came into the store just inside the garage door," said Coweta Hardware and Lumber Owner Darryl DeMoss.

You heard him right, Miss Henryetta in fact crossed the road and just showed up one hot July day.

“So from that point on she’s been pretty much hanging around the store.”

Her food sprawled across the garage, Henryetta bobs around whenever and wherever she wants.

Until one day her cute, red comb wasn't enough to pluck her out of trouble with Coweta Animal Control.

“She’d been a jail bird for about an hour and she came back with a tattoo, and smoking a cigarette, kind of had an attitude, but we got her straightened back up.”

The city told Darryl it could give her back under one condition, he had to build her a coop and she wasted no time laying eggs, and making it home.

Now with her new home, and her favorite ice treats at her disposal, Henryetta has finally helped us answer one of life's most pressing questions.

“But we do know why she crossed the road. You know, to come to the hardware store.”

Darryl tells 2 Works for You he received a call from someone who believed they lost a chicken the day he found Henryetta, but they want her to enjoy her newfound fame in her new home.
