Green Country Regional Spelling Bee champion, Will McCollom, will attempt history and try to become the youngest National Spelling Bee champion in history.

McCollom, 8, will join over 90 other students from all over the world near Washington, D.C., to compete in the 2016 National Spelling Bee that will air on the ESPN and ABC networks.

Though McCollom has spent most of his time preparing for the competition, he also takes part in activities such as chess, soccer, reading, and model building.

With a very busy schedule McCollom is always on the move, however his father Mitchell says although his son is involved in quite a few activities he's pleased with the way Will has responded.

“We were worried about that at the beginning, but he manages it pretty well. If something gets to be too much, we pull back on it if we feel like it's getting to that point. So far, he's been doing pretty good with it,” Mitchell McCollom said.

McCollom, who was confident he'd make the national competition, is excited to experience touring around Washington, D.C. and visiting the National Zoo in Adams Morgan. However, above all McCollom expects to meet new people and make many new friends from around the world.

“I just know that I'm going to make a lot of friends, that will be really fun about the whole thing. I'm going to make friends (from) all over the country and even internationally, some other countries and representatives. So I think that will be fun,” Will McCollom said.

The competition will begin on May 23rd with written tests in the Maryland Ballroom within the Gaylord National Resort and Convention center in National Harbor, Maryland.
