Facebook promised to match $2 million in donations to nonprofits on Giving Tuesday.

That goal was met before the sun had barely risen in the U.S. A post on the "Nonprofits for Facebook" page just after 9 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday said while the limit was already reached, Facebook would still waive fees the entire day to allow for greater impact.

"Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation matched $2 million in donations to nonprofits," the post read.

People generously donated $45 million to causes around the world, according to the Nonprofits on Facebook page.

"We are continually inspired by the hard work, creativity and generosity showcased on this global day of giving," one post on the page reads.

Facebook allows nonprofits to seek donations and offers buttons and fundraiser tips.
