It’s already been over a year and a half since HBO’s “Game of Thrones” came to an end, but we’re all about to get another passage into the kingdom of Westeros.

The network has announced that filming is about to start on a new spinoff series that will take place 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” The prequel will be called “House of the Dragon” and will dig into the history of House Targaryen, one of the major bloodlines in the original show.

The towheaded Targaryens, including breakout character Daenerys from “Game of Thrones,” had a proud history as a ruling family in the original show’s lore, but were undone by their own brutality and instability, meaning this new series should have plenty of juicy moments.

Further details about “House of the Dragon” are scant, but HBO has announced that English actor Paddy Considine, most recently from the network’s “The Third Day,” will star as King Viserys Targaryen. Like the original show, the prequel will be based on a novel by author George R. R. Martin. His massive 2018 tome, “Fire & Blood” will lay the groundwork.

Martin will also serve as co-creator and executive producer of the new series, giving it even more heft with fantasy lovers.

The series was given a 10-episode initial order by HBO and a release date has yet to be announced, but we now know that production is ready to start. In a Dec. 3 post on Medium, Jason Kilar, CEO of HBO’s parent company, WarnerMedia, announced that filming will start “in a few months.”

“Look out for dragons overhead!” he wrote in the post, where he also shared some new concept art for the show.

If “House of the Dragon” gets anywhere near the kind of online traction and viewership numbers that its predecessor got, it will be another huge success for HBO.

Seriously. Can 2021 get here fast enough?
