When a couple begins to expand their family, it’s often left to moms to decide what baby gear they should acquire. But one father found an ingenious way to get both a changing table and a future garage accessory out of one particular purchase.

David Pike, the owner of MotorCity Mechanic in Atlanta, came up with “dad hack” that was recently featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” With two older daughters and twins on the way, the expectant dad couldn’t remember needing a changing table for his older children, and he didn’t want to buy a piece of furniture that would only be used for a few years. So he suggested to his wife, Denise, that purchasing a tool cart would be a better long-term solution.

Wait. What?

“Feast your eyes on the Ultimate Diaper Changing Station for under $200,” Pike wrote on the MotorCity Mechanic Facebook page, alongside pics of the adapted Husky tool cart. “[T]he most practical and functional changing station on the planet! Plus when all is done it makes its way to the garage for repurposing.”

As you can see in the photos above, Pike added a changing pad and some foam pipe insulation along the top of the toolbox shelf. Then he put some baskets at the bottom, an extra shelf up top for frequently used items and an LED light for late-night changes. The tool drawers were perfect compartments for baby clothes, wipes and other paraphernalia.

As Pike wrote in a Cafe Mom post, he’s happy and his wife’s happy, too.

“I can’t help but think that she had a plan as well,” he wrote. “‘Let him find something that he thinks is the greatest thing ever and that way he will be more than happy to change diapers!'”

It’s been almost a year and a half since Pike’s twins arrived, and more recent photos on the MotorCity Mechanic Facebook and Instagram page show he’s moved on to assembling Little Tikes Cozy Coupes, watching first steps and purchasing Hot Wheels cars on diapers runs to Kroger.

So perhaps it won’t be too much longer before Pike can transition that toolbox cart from baby to garage mode.
